David Trimble, the former first minister of Northern Ireland who won the Nobel Peace Prize and whose diplomacy helped put an end to decades of conflict, passed away on Monday (July 25) at the age of 77, according to his party.

After the pair signed the historic agreement in 1998, Trimble, a key architect of the tumultuous UK province’s historic peace deal, shared the award with pro-Irish leader John Hume.
