Minister-Designate for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, has refuted claims of pregnancy concerning Naa Okromo Ayemuede, who was reportedly married to the Gborbu Wulomo of the Nungua Traditional Area.
The minister-designate clarified that a medical assessment on Naa Okromo confirmed that she is not pregnant.
During a joint-ministerial briefing in Accra, Dakoa Newman disclosed that according to early education records, Naa Okromo is 15 years old. She emphasized that the medical assessment indicated that Naa Okromo is in good health and will be allowed to continue her education while being reunited with her parents.
An interim report from the Attorney-General dated April 18, 2024, advised that Naa Okromo should be released to her parents in accordance with Sections 2 and 5 of the Children’s Act for the best interest of the child.
Naa Okromo was reportedly married to the 63-year-old Nungua Gborbu Wulomo in a customary marriage ceremony on March 30. The Nungua Traditional Council claimed that Naa Okromo was 16 years old at the time of the alleged marriage. Since then, she has been under the protection of the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
The Information Ministry stated in a release that Naa Okromo is safe and has been visited by officials from the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection. The Nungua Traditional Council made efforts to demand the release of Naa Ayemuede, their 16-year-old queen mother, from the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra.
