Mayra Nohemi Flores, born January 1, 1986, is a Mexican American politician and physician from Texas. She is the Representative-elect for Texas’s 34th congressional district after winning a special election on June 14, 2022, to replace former Congressman Filemon Vela Jr., who resigned in March 2022 and did not serve out the remainder of his elected term. She will be the country’s first Mexican-born congresswoman.
Flores was born to migrant farmworkers in Burgos, Tamaulipas. She moved to America when she was six years old. During her childhood, her family moved frequently throughout Texas; she graduated from high school in San Benito and worked in cotton fields with her parents in Memphis. She earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from South Texas College in 2019.
