The DJ and singer for the diverse British dance band Faithless, Maxi Jazz, passed away at the age of 65.
On Saturday, Faithless, best known for the singles Insomnia and We Come 1, posted on social media an announcement of his passing.
Maxi Jazz made his debut in the British club scene in the 1980s as a DJ on pirate radio and the creator of the Soul Food Cafe System. Maxi Jazz was born Maxwell Fraser in London.
Later, he co-founded Faithless with singer-songwriter Jamie Cotto, producer-instrumentalist-DJ Rollo Armstrong, keyboardist-DJ Sister Bliss, and DJ Sister Bliss.
Their record company referred to their 1996 debut album Reverence as “folk-house-hip-hop-blues-ambience-jazz-rap for the dance floor and sofa” since they drew from such a diverse spectrum of inspirations.
Although reverence first failed to take off, it finally attracted a large following.
Through its exciting live performances and albums like Outrospective and the greatest hits collection Forever Faithless, the band went on to gain international recognition.
Jazz left Faithless in 2011, however the band recently got back together without him because he had subsequently started Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys.
