Max Julien was an American actor best known for playing Goldie in the blaxploitation film The Mack in 1973.

He has also appeared in Def Jam’s How to Be a Player and has appeared as a guest star on television shows such as The Mod Squad and One on One.

Julien was described as “a standout in a standout cast” by New York Times film critic Judith Crist for his performance in 1968’s Up Tight! “Max Julien’s portrayal of Johnny Wells in Paramount’s Uptight could very well result in an Academy Award,” wrote Raoul Gripenwaldt of the Santa Monica Evening Outlook.

According to his TMZ, the actor/writer/producer died on January 1. His wife discovered him early Saturday morning they said.

They added in a statement “Throughout Julien’s long career, he was known for being brave, honest, and forthright. Both professionally and privately, he would live and speak his own truth. He was regarded as a rare man among men.'”

No cause of death has yet been revealed. Julien is survived by his wife, Arabella. He was 88.
