Maurice Ampaw, a private attorney, declined the Kumasi Traditional Council’s invitation to attend after being accused of disparaging the Asantehene.
Mr. Ampaw was given a week to present Chairman Wontumi, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, before the council at the Manhyia Palace, along with the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ampaw explained his decision to not accept the invitation in a recent response on Kasapa Radio, saying that he saw it as a verbal assault on his moral character.
Mr. Ampaw stated that he felt insulted by some traditional leaders and thought his case had been prejudged without hearing his side of the story, even though at first he had intended to accept the invitation out of respect for Manhyia.
“I’ve been attacked, and my enemies are using this against me. These attacks have been widely shared on social media.
“I’ve received insults from various media outlets. I told my side of the story, but nobody listened. He asked, “So why do you think I’ll be at Manhyia on Monday?” “You’ve made up your mind already,” he continued.
The attorney’s choice to skip the summons coincides with heightened tensions over the purportedly disparaging remarks made about the Asantehene.
The Kumasi Traditional Council had given Ampaw and the NPP leadership a week to produce Chairman Wontumi, but the lawyer’s absence from the meeting gives the situation a new twist.
It is unclear how the Kumasi Traditional Council will react to Ampaw’s decision in light of the ongoing controversy and whether any additional steps will be taken to address the alleged insults to the Asantehene.
