His big break came at the 2016 Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open when he finished fourth behind Rory McIlroy and earned 200,000 euros. He maintained his strong form by winning the last qualifying round at Royal Cinque Ports, finishing tied for 11th in the Open de France, and then tying for 12th in the Open.
Southgate had a slow start to 2017, but he found his form again in the same tournaments as he did in 2016. He qualified for the Open Championship again through final qualifying at Royal Cinque Ports, finished second in the Dubai Duty-Free Irish Open behind Jon Rahm, and tied for sixth in the Open.
Southgate was given a four-stroke penalty at the DAP Championship in September 2017 while attempting to obtain a PGA Tour card through the Web.com Tour Finals when a leaf diverted the course of his golf ball mid-putt. He received a two-stroke penalty for failing to replay the putt, as well as additional two strokes for signing an erroneous scorecard.
