Matthew Louis Gaetz II is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the United States Representative for Florida’s 1st congressional district since 2017.
As a Republican, he has emerged as one of former President Donald Trump’s most important legislative friends.

Gaetz grew up in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, the son of notable Florida politician Don Gaetz. He temporarily worked in private practice after graduating from William & Mary Law School before running for state representative.
He was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016, and he gained national recognition for supporting Florida’s contentious “stand-your-ground” statute in the aftermath of Trayvon Martin’s death in 2012. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2016, and he was re-elected in 2018 and 2020.
