During her 1997 guilty plea to two charges of felony second-degree rape of a minor, Mary Katherine Fualaau, originally Letourneau; who lived from January 30, 1962 to July 6, 2020) was an American teacher.

Vili Fualaau, a 12-year-old student in her sixth grade at an elementary school in Burien, Washington, was the young person at the time of the first sexual encounters.

She became pregnant with Fualaau’s child while she awaited punishment. She negotiated a plea agreement with the prosecution that included, among other conditions, a lifetime ban on contact with Fualaau and a seven and a half year prison sentence, with three months of that sentence being postponed. National media coverage was given to the case.

Letourneau was apprehended by the police in a car with Fualaau shortly after serving her three-month sentence. The maximum seven and a half-year prison term allowed by law was reinstated when the judge overturned her plea deal.

She gave birth to Fualaau’s second child, a daughter, eight months after going back to prison. From 1998 to 2004, she was incarcerated.

Letourneau and Fualaau were wed in May 2005, and they were separated in 2019 after a 14-year union.
