Marvin Pentz Gay Jr., also known as Marvin Gaye, was an American singer and songwriter. He was known by both versions of his surname. Marvin Pentz Gay Jr. was born on April 2, 1939, in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, at Freedman’s Hospital. His father, church preacher Marvin Gay Sr., and mother, domestic worker Alberta Gay, were his parents.
