Marvin Pentz Gay Jr., commonly known by his last name Gaye, was an American singer and songwriter who lived from April 2, 1939, to April 1, 1984. As an internal session musician in the 1960s and then as a solo artist with a run of triumphs, he contributed to defining the sound of Motown, garnering the titles “Prince of Motown” and “Prince of Soul.”

“Ain’t That Peculiar,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” are some of Gaye’s Motown classics. Gaye also collaborated on duets with Diana Ross, Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells, and Kim Weston.

In June 1963, Gaye wed Berry Gordy’s sister, Anna Gordy. In November 1975, Gordy filed for divorce after the couple’s 1973 separation. In 1977, the couple filed for divorce. In October 1977, Gaye wed Janis Hunter. The pair divorced formally in February 1981 after separating in 1979.

Marvin III, Nona, and Frankie were the three children that Gaye was the father to. Denise Gordy, Anna’s niece, who was 16 when Marvin III was born, was his biological mother. Gaye’s second wife, Janis, gave birth to Nona and Frankie. Gaye’s three children, parents, and five siblings were still alive at the time of his passing.
