Martin Yan is a Hong Kong-American chef and food critic who was born on December 22, 1948.
Since 1982, he has been the host of the acclaimed PBS-TV cookery program Yan Can Cook.
Yan was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China to a restaurant father and a grocer mother. She had ancestry in Hoiping.
At the age of twelve, Yan started cooking. He relocated to Hong Kong when he was 13 and enrolled at Munsang College in Kowloon City. ‘
He worked at his uncle’s Chinese restaurant while attending Munsang College and gained knowledge of the traditional Chinese barbeque technique.
He left Hong Kong after receiving his certificate from the Overseas Institute of Cookery to pursue further education in Canada.
In 1975, Yan graduated with a Master of Science in food science from the University of California, Davis.
In 1978, Yan started instructing Chinese cookery for a college extension program and making appearances from Calgary on a Canadian talk show .
Since 1982, he has presented more than 3,500 episodes of the PBS cookery program Yan Can Cook. More than 50 nations have broadcast his shows.
Yan developed the Yan Can International Cooking School in San Francisco and launched a network of Yan Can restaurants. He has authored more than twenty cookbooks.
