Martin Charles Scorsese, born November 17, 1942, is a film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor from the United States. He has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, three Emmy Awards, four British Academy Film Awards, two Directors Guild of America Awards, an AFI Life Achievement Award, and the Kennedy Center Honor in 2007.

In 1968, Scorsese graduated from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development with an MA. Who’s That Knocking at My Door (1967), his directorial debut, was selected for the Chicago Film Festival.

Scorsese emerged as a significant character of the New Hollywood era in the 1970s and 1980s. Scorsese’s works, which are heavily influenced by his Italian-American heritage and upbringing in New York City, revolve around macho-posturing insecure males and explore crime, machismo, nihilism, and Catholic concepts of guilt and redemption. His signature methods include a lot of slow motion and freeze frames, graphic images of violent violence, and a lot of profanity.
