McDonagh was born and raised in London, England, by his mother, a housekeeper, and his construction worker father. John McDonagh, his younger brother, is a well-known screenwriter. After doing so for ten years, he penned his first seven plays in 1994, many of which were later presented in London, including “The Cripple of Irishmaan” and other works.

The Catholic schools received both of the boys. When they were youngsters, they would spend summers in their father’s hometown of Connemara, which eventually served as the inspiration for several of McDonagh’s plays.
Al Pacino was a well-known idol of his, and he frequently watched his films on television. He saved money from various jobs and went to see his first play in 1984 when he was 14 years old. It was a David Mamet drama called American Buffalo, which starred Al Pacino in the title role.
