Martin John Christopher Freeman (born 8 September 1971) is an English actor. He has won an Emmy, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and he has been nominated for a Golden Globe. Freeman’s most notable roles include Tim Canterbury in the mockumentary series The Office (2001-2003), Dr. John Watson in the British crime drama series Sherlock (2010-2017), Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit film trilogy (2012-2014), and Lester Nygaard in the first season of the dark comedy-crime drama series Fargo (2014).

He also starred in the comedies Love Actually (2003), Shaun of the Dead (2004), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Hot Fuzz (2007), and Nativity! (2009), and The World’s End (2013). He also played Everett K. Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero movies Captain America: Civil War (2016), Black Panther (2018), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2017). The upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion will feature him reprising the part. In April 2014, he landed the role of insurance salesman Lester Nygaard in the dark comedy-crime drama Fargo. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Critics’ Choice Television Award for his performance in this series. In July 2014, he made his Trafalgar Studios debut in the title role of Shakespeare’s play Richard III.

Freeman lives in London’s Belsize Park neighborhood. He previously shared a home with actress Amanda Abbington in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. They were married from 2000 to 2016, and have two children, Joe and Grace. They appeared in a number of films, including Sherlock, Swinging with the Finkels, The Debt, The Robinsons, and The All Together. On December 22, 2016, it was announced that Freeman and Abbington had divorced. He is a vegetarian and no longer attends church. He is a close friend of actor Simon Pegg, who is also his son’s godfather.

Freeman’s personal style is influenced by the British mod subculture, and he cites Paul Weller as one of his heroes and influences. He enjoys soul, Motown, and jazz music and hosted “Martin Freeman Goes to Motown” on BBC Two’s The Culture Show in 2009. He also chose music for a 2006 Motown compilation titled Made to Measure and collaborated with his friend Eddie Piller on a jazz compilation titled Jazz on the Corner, which was released on Acid Jazz Records on March 23, 2018, and featured tracks by Kamasi Washington and The Brand New Heavies. Craig Charles’ Funk and Soul Show was presented by the pair on March 31, 2018. In 2019, a follow-up album titled Soul on the Corner was announced, featuring tracks by Leroy Hutson and Bobby Womack.

Geoffrey and Philomena Freeman are Martin’s parents. His father, Mr. Geoffrey Freeman, is a naval officer by trade, and his mother, Mrs. Philomena Freeman, is a housewife.

He has four brothers and sisters. Tim Freeman is one of his three brothers. Benedict and Jamie Freeman are his parents, and he has one sister named Laura Freeman. Martin Freeman is currently divorced. He married actress Amanda Abbington in the year 2000. But, unfortunately, they divorced in 2016. Grace Freeman and Joe Freeman are the names of the couple’s two children.
