American singer Martha Rose Reeves was born on July 18, 1941. She sings R&B and pop. With more than a dozen hit singles under their belt, including “Dancing in the Street,” “Come and Get These Memories,” “Nowhere to Run,” “Heat Wave,” and “Jimmy Mack,” she is the group’s primary vocalist.
From 2005 until 2009, Reeves served as an elected councilwoman for the city of Detroit, Michigan. In 1995, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
She first worked with Annette Beard, Gloria Williams, Rosalind Ashford, and Edward “Pops” Larkins in 1957 when they founded the singing group The Del-Phis, which was intended to complement a male vocal group of Edward “Pops” Larkins’.
The Del-Phis were well-liked neighborhood performers. Apparently a fan of the group, Reeves was connected to Gloria Williams, who invited him to join the group in 1960.
