Martha Elizabeth Beall Jennings Mitchell was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, on September 2, 1918, to cotton trader George V. Beall and theatrical instructor Arie Beall Ferguson.
Later in life, she recalls playing with the children of her African-American “mammy,” who resided with the Bealls since other relatives were far away. She has sung in a church choir as a youngster, and her mother wanted for her to become an opera singer.

About her family, not much is known. It is noted that Mitchell died on May 31, 1976, from the advanced stages of multiple myeloma at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City.
At the time, she was 57 years old. Her funeral service was placed at the First Presbyterian Church.
