Mark Goddard, an American actor best known for his numerous television performances, was born Charles Harvey Goddard on July 24, 1936, and died on October 10, 2023. He initially pursued an acting career after leading his high school baseball and basketball teams to the state championship finals.
He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. After leaving the College of the Holy Cross, he proceeded to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City to continue his studies before relocating to Los Angeles.
In 1959, Goddard made his acting debut in the CBS television series “Johnny Ringo,” playing the deputy to Don Durant’s Ringo in the part of Cully.
On the recommendation of his friend and mentor Chuck Connors of “The Rifleman,” he did so at this point and began using the stage name Mark Goddard. He kept appearing in several TV programs, such as “The DuPont Show with June Allyson” and “The Rebel.”
Major Don West, a character from the CBS television series “Lost in Space,” played by him, is widely regarded as his most famous performance. Alongside the Robinson family, he managed complicated relationships and trying circumstances in the series. The cast of the television series reassembled for a 1998 feature picture adaptation, but “Lost in Space: The Journey Home,” the planned sequel, was never produced.
