Her parents, Marie and Sean (a structural engineer who later became a lawyer), divorced when Sinéad was a young child. She has four siblings named John, Eimear, Joseph, and Eoin. She initially resided with her abusive mother after the divorce, but in 1979 she made the decision to move in with her father and stepmother; her mother passed away in a car accident a few years later. Sinéad has stated that certain events at Magdalene caused her “panic and terror and agony.” O’Connor was sent to Magdalene Asylum, a Catholic Grianán Training Center, for 18 months at the age of 15 due to her truancy and shoplifting. Later, O’Connor dropped out of high school to work for a singing telegram service in Dublin, where he began performing music in pubs and on the street.
