Marcio Freire is a 47-year-old veteran Brazilian surfer. Freire was one of three Brazilian surfers who acquired the nickname “Mad Dogs” after overcoming Hawaii’s terrifying “Jaws” wave. In the 2016 documentary Mad Dogs, Freire participates alongside Danilo Couto and Yuri Soledade.
He died while surfing the local huge waves at the renowned Portuguese surf location on Thursday, January 6. The water accident was declared around 4:16 p.m.
The Brazilian large wave surfing pioneer was “dragged to the shore by a partner [Lucas Chumbo] on a jet ski, already in cardio-respiratory arrest,” according to the captain of the Port of Nazaré in the Leiria region.
