Marcio Freire is a 47-year-old veteran Brazilian surfer. Freire was one of three Brazilian surfers who became known as the ‘Mad Dogs’ after overcoming Hawaii’s infamous ‘Jaws’ wave. Freire appeared in the 2016 documentary Mad Dogs alongside Danilo Couto and Yuri Soledade.
He perished on Thursday, January 6 while surfing the local huge waves at the infamous Portuguese surf location. The water accident was declared around 4:16 p.m.
The Brazilian large wave surfing pioneer “was hauled to the beach by a partner [Lucas Chumbo] on a jet ski, already in cardio-respiratory arrest,” according to the captain of the Port of Nazaré in the region of Leiria.
