Marcel Marceau, born Marcel Mangel on March 22, 1923, was a French actor and mime artist best known as “Bip the Clown” on stage.

He referred to mime as the “art of silence,” and he performed professionally all around the world for more than 60 years.

As a Jewish boy, he stayed in hiding and worked with the French Resistance for the majority of WWII, giving his first significant performance to 3,000 troops after Paris was liberated in August. During the war, he went to Paris to study dramatic art and mime.  The prominent actor sadly died on 22 September 2007.
