A man in Mexico received a shocking surprise when he ordered a smartphone online and received a bomb in the mail instead.
The anonymous buyer had ordered a smartphone from an internet retailer and anticipated a routine delivery to his León, Guanajuato, residence.
However, his mother accepted the gift when it came last Monday and set it on the kitchen table.
To his surprise, when he opened the package, he found that it was really a fragmentation grenade instead of a smartphone. A bomb squad was sent to the location after he immediately alerted the police to the possibly fatal mix-up.
The Ministry of National Defense surrounded the man’s home out of caution. Thankfully, the army was able to detonate the explosion.
Authorities are now investigating the mysterious package and its sender. The motive behind sending a grenade instead of the smartphone remains unclear. Notably, possession of such a device is illegal in Mexico.
