The Volta Regional Police Command in Akatsi has, however, confirmed the death of an inmate who was found hanging in the police cell.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned and said deceased, by the name of Mr. Simon Doeve, who was earlier accused of murder, was going through committal at the Akatsi District Court and was and has been remanded to go back on March 13 but hanged himself ahead of the court date.

Given the lack of any indications of an assault, it appears that the police have also not, in one way or another, suspected any outside interference. It was also noted that he had not disclosed or discussed anything regarding the incidents with any of the inmates in the cell before attempting to do so and had succeeded as well. His body has been deposited at the Ho Teaching Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

The police briefing notes said Doeve, however, was remanded into police custody on February 12, 2024, but hanged himself on the same day. This could be considered depression, as lots of thoughts run through his mind and he has nothing to do but kill himself.

In addition, the investigation also revealed that at about 0350 hours, the counter-non-commissioned officer sergeant known by the name Mr. Gideon Ndsuga visited the cells and detected that the accused person was not part of the inmates, precisely.

After he asked and inquired, he was told that the deceased, thus Doeve, was in the washroom, only to find him hanging from the fan hook on the ceiling with a duster used for cleaning the washroom.

Meanwhile, the brief also said the family of the deceased was informed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Andrews Boadu Ekumah, the Regional Police Commander.

Later, the family was allowed by the personnel, through a proper channel of distribution into the cells, to identify him.
