Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently commended FC Samartex, the winners of the Ghana Premier League, for their outstanding achievement. During a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo motivated the team to aim for excellence as they prepare to represent the nation in the upcoming CAF Champions League.

Encouraging the players to uphold the honor of the nation in the competition, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of their role as representatives of Ghana on the continental stage. FC Samartex secured the GPL title for the 2023/2024 season with a remarkable total of 61 points from 34 games, officially clinching the championship on June 16, 2024.

The underdog team’s triumph over renowned clubs like Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, considered Ghana’s top clubs, marked a significant milestone in their history. As they prepare to kick off their Champions League campaign against Victoria United from Cameroon in the preliminary round on August 16, 2024, FC Samartex aims to secure a spot in the group stages of the competition.

President Akufo-Addo assured the club of the government’s financial support to bolster their efforts in the continental tournament. Stressing the importance of determination and resilience, he urged the players to give their best performance on the field. CEO of FC Samartex, Mr. Richard Nsenkyire, expressed gratitude to the President for the audience and highlighted the team’s potential to excel with the necessary financial backing.

With hopes high and the nation’s support behind them, FC Samartex is poised to make a mark in the CAF Champions League and continue Ghana’s legacy in African club football. The last time a Ghanaian club lifted the prestigious Champions League trophy was in 2000, with Accra Hearts of Oak achieving the feat and following it up with the CAF Super Cup in 2001. As FC Samartex embarks on this new journey, the Ghanaian football community eagerly anticipates their performance on the continental stage.
