Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is currently the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken out against the recent detention of NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo.

In a statement shared on social media, Mahama expressed his concern that this arrest could potentially escalate political tensions in the country.

Mahama specifically criticized the decision by Inspector General of Police George Dampare, acting on orders from National Security Advisor Albert Kan Dapaah, to detain Naa Koryoo in police custody. He emphasized that there was no justification for this action, especially as Naa Koryoo had already been granted bail.

The former president highlighted the importance of justice in maintaining peace and stability in Ghana, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 elections. He called on the IGP, the Peace Council, the government, and the citizens of Ghana to recognize the dangers of using law enforcement to intimidate opposition and political opponents.

Mahama pointed out that detaining Naa Koryoo, who is challenging the incumbent Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, could be seen as an attempt to suppress political competition. He urged the IGP to reconsider his decision and release Naa Koryoo immediately to uphold justice and ensure the stability of the nation.

The former president also emphasized the importance of the police force serving and protecting all citizens regardless of their political affiliations. He concluded his statement with the hashtags #JusticeForNaaKoryoo and #FreeNaaKoryooNow, calling for a swift resolution to the situation to prevent further escalation of tensions.
