Actor Luis Guzmán was born in Puerto Rico on August 28, 1956. His nearly 40-year career has included a lot of movies and television shows.

Guzmán was raised in Greenwich Village and the nearby Lower East Side in New York City after being born in Cayey, Puerto Rico. His stepfather, Benjamin Cardona, was a TV repairman, and his mother, Rosa, worked in a hospital.

Guzmán received his degree from The American University, started working as a social worker soon after, and finally got very interested in street theater and indie movies.

He has acted in the Steven Soderbergh films Out of Sight (1998), The Limey (1999), and Traffic as well as the Paul Thomas Anderson films Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), and Punch-Drunk Love (2002). (2000). Q & A (1990), The Hard Way (1991), Carlito’s Way (1993), The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), and Keanu (1990) are some of his more film credits (2016).

His roles on television include Raoul “El Cid” Hernandez on the HBO prison drama Oz (1998–2000), José Gonzalo Rodrguez Gacha on the Netflix series Narcos (2015), Jesse “Mama” Salander on the CBS medical drama Code Black (2015–18), and Hector Contreras on Perpetual Grace, LTD (2019).
