Hamilton started cycling at the age of 12 with the Ararat and Districts Cycling Club in Victoria. In 2014, he received a Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship for his outstanding performance.
Hamilton was named to his first national team at the age of 20 in 2016. He won the Mountains Classification in the 2016 Tour de l’Avenir after competing in the U19 World Road Race Championship. This race is popularly known as the U23 Tour de France. Overall, he finished the event as runner-up.
In 2017, Hamilton agreed to a three-year contract with Mitchelton-Scott. Hamilton was named Australia’s World Tour one-day classic and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race’s Best Young Rider.
