When Louis witnessed his father’s buddy, Oom Piet Fourie, chipping 9-irons while walking toward town one day, he agreed to give it a try.
“Let that boy play golf,” Oom advised Mr. Oosthuizen after watching 9-year-old Louis smash a few shots. Keep an eye on him.

Louis informed his father a few years later that he had no aspirations to attend college.
His father attempted to persuade Louis, but he refused. “There’s no Plan B, only golf,” Louis said to his father.
Piet claimed he used the money he had set aside “for university” to buy gas to drive Louis to tournaments.
The Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation was founded in 1999 with the goal of educating young golfers and growing the game in South Africa.
