American powerlifter Louie Simmons has died. The news of his death came at midnight Thursday (March 24, 2022). He died at the age of 74.
Simmons was a legendary powerlifter, coach, founder of Westside Barbell, inventor, and was credited as the mastermind behind conjugate training.
Born on October 12, 1947, Louie Simmons showed interest in weight training early on and entered the world of powerlifting in his early 20s.
He dedicated five decades of his life coaching some of the sport’s most notable and elite competitors — including Chuck Vogelphol, EliteFTS founder Dave Tate, Jim Wendler, and J.M. Blakely.

The post said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Louie Simmons. We will make a formal announcement after we process the loss.”
The post also contains an excerpt from Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ famous poem: “Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
