Louis Buller Gohmert Jr. is an American lawyer, politician, and former judge who has represented Texas’s 1st congressional district since 2005. Gohmert is a Republican who participated in the Tea Party movement. He unsuccessfully ran against John Boehner for Speaker of the House in January 2015.

In November 2021, he declared his campaign for Texas Attorney General in 2022. With 17 percent of the vote, he failed to proceed to the Republican primary runoff.

David Brooks Gohmert and Bill Gohmert are the siblings of Louie.

Gohmert attended The JAG School at the University of Virginia with his brothers before joining the United States Army JAG Corps. From 1978 until 1982, he was a member of the JAG Corps at Fort Benning, Georgia.

He spent most of his legal career in the United States Army as a defense attorney.

From 1992 until 2002, Gohmert served as a state court judge in Texas’ 7th Judicial District, representing Smith County (Tyler, Texas). He was re-elected three times.

He initially gained national attention for a 1996 probation condition in which he required an HIV-positive man convicted of motor vehicle theft to get written consent from all future sexual relations on a court-provided document informing them of his HIV status.

His wife Kathy and he have three children.
