Lewis Reed was a musician, composer, and poet from the United States who passed away on October 27, 2013, aged 71.
Reed, whose career in the music industry lasted for over five decades, served as a guitarist, singer, and primary songwriter for the rock band Velvet Underground. Reed’s distinct deadpan voice, poetic and rebellious lyrics, and experimental guitar playing were hallmarks of his long and illustrious career.

Both of his parents are late. His father who was an accountant died in 2013 while his mother passed away in 2005.
Reed had to endure the ravages of hepatitis and diabetes for many years. He was given interferon but acquired liver cancer as a result.
He had a liver transplant at the Cleveland Clinic in May 2013. He later said that he felt larger and more powerful than before after the transplant. It however backfired as he died on October 27, 2013, at the age of 71, from liver illness.
