When Lewandowski, 34, finally scored in his fifth World Cup game, he collapsed to the ground and broke down in tears as he returned to the center circle.
Piotr Zielinski had given Poland the lead in the 39th minute, and Wojciech Szczesny had saved a penalty shot in the last seconds of the first half before Lewandowski’s goal.
Salem Al-penalty Dawsari’s kick was initially saved by the former Arsenal goalkeeper, who then turned aside Mohammed Al-Burayk’s rebound.
But late in the game, Lewandowski scored when Abdulellah Al-Malki made a mistake, sealing Poland’s triumph. Now, Poland just needs a draw against Argentina on Wednesday to advance to the round of 16, needing a win to secure their spot in the last 16.
