American musician Mark Lavon “Levon” Helm (May 26, 1940 – April 19, 2012) was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 for his work as one of the Band’s three lead vocalists and drummer. Many of the Band’s recordings, including “The Weight,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” feature Helm’s creative drumming style, multi-instrumental proficiency, and deeply soulful, country-accented voice.

Helm also had a successful career as an actor in movies. He played Loretta Lynn’s father in the 1980 film Coal Miner’s Daughter, Captain Jack Ridley, Chuck Yeager’s friend and colleague, in the 1983 film The Right Stuff, a Tennessee firearms expert in the 2007 film Shooter, and General John Bell Hood in the 2009 film In the Electric Mist.
