Lester Keith Piggott was a professional jockey from England who died on May 29, 2022.
He is widely considered one of the best flat racing riders of all time, having won 4,493 races in his career, including a record nine Epsom Derby triumphs.
He went on to ride almost 4,000 winners until retiring for the first time in 1985.
Derby-winning trainer William Haggas, Piggot’s son-in-law, stated: “Lester died quietly this morning in Switzerland, we can confirm. I really don’t want to say much more at this point, however, Maureen will make a statement later.”
Piggott was granted an OBE in 1975, but the honor was revoked when he was sentenced to three years in jail for income tax cheating in 1987.
He is widely considered one of the best flat racing riders of all time and the innovator of a frequently emulated style, with 4,493 career wins, including a record nine Epsom Derby triumphs.
He was 86.
