Leslie Uggams, the award-winning American actress, and singer was born May 25, 1943, in Harlem. She was born to Juanita and Harold Uggams.
She attended the Professional’s Children School of New York and Juilliard. Uggams started her career as a child in show business in 1951, playing the niece of Ethel Waters on Beulah.
She made her professional debut at the age of six on Jack Barry’s NBC show “Stars And Stardust.
In 1954, when Uggams turned 10 years old, she made a record for MGM, which included a reworking of the song Santa Baby as “Uncle Santa,” with words suitable for a child.
Uggams’s role as Kizzy Reynolds in the television miniseries Root (1977), earned her Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominations.
She is married to Grahame Pratt and they have two children Danielle and Justice. Uggams and Pratt met at the Professional Children’s School of New York, where they were both students.
However, it was after their meeting in Sydney where she was performing during one of Uggams’s celebrity tours in Australia, that their relationship took off.
