Leonid Shvartsman was born in Minsk on August 30, 1920, and after graduating from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1941, he was enlisted in the military.
He has been employed at the Soyuzmultfilm film company since 1948. In 1951, he graduated from VGIK with a diploma in cartoon art direction, and he later worked with Alexander Vinokurov as a production designer. Shvartsman started working independently in 1963, and as a director in 1975.

He was raised in a religious Yiddish-speaking family in the old city of Minsk, BSSR, where he was born. At a brick factory, his father worked as an accountant, but he passed away suddenly when Shvartsman was only 13 years old.
He looked out more fringe areas of the art world because he was homeless, didn’t have parents or siblings, and couldn’t pursue an art job.
