He died from natural causes.

In Milan, he began his career as an apprentice to a tool and die manufacturer before deciding to use his metalworking abilities to create spectacle pieces.

He relocated to Agordo in the province of Belluno in 1961, which is home to the majority of the Italian eyeglasses sector.

Del Vecchio emerged from an orphanage youth to acquire a fortune in the tens of billions of euros in one of Italy’s most famous rags-to-riches stories of the post-war economic rebound.

“Leonardo Del Vecchio was an outstanding Italian. His journey from orphanage to commercial empire leader seemed to be from another era. However, it serves as a model for today and the future. RIP, “On Twitter, European Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni stated.

The Italian entrepreneur started Luxottica in 1961 and grew it into a corporation that controlled the Ray-Ban brand before merging with France’s Essilor in a big merger in 2018.

He was EssilorLuxottica’s executive chairman until December 2020, when he turned up day-to-day control to Chief Executive Francesco Milleri. When the Franco-Italian eyeglasses conglomerate was formed, he personally endorsed Milleri as CEO.
