Vander Esch announced his decision to forego his remaining eligibility and enter the 2018 NFL Draft on December 21, 2017. In late February, Vander Esch attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and completed all of the combine and positional drills. Scouts were impressed by Vander Esch’s overall combine performance, as he finished tied for second among all linebackers in the vertical jump and short shuttle. He also finished fifth among linebackers in the broad jump and tied for fifth in the three-cone drill.

Vander Esch attended Boise State’s pro day on April 3rd, but chose to stand on his combine numbers and only participate in positional drills. He went on pre-draft visits with the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, and Buffalo Bills, among others. At the conclusion of the pre-draft process, NFL draft experts and scouts projected Vander Esch to be a first-round pick. Sports Illustrated ranked him as the third best linebacker prospect in the draft, DraftScout.com ranked him as the third best outside linebacker, NFL analyst Mike Mayock ranked him as the fourth best linebacker, and ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. ranked him as the sixth best outside linebacker in the draft.
