Gender, Children, and Social Protection Minister, Dakoa Newman, has commended the positive impact of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Program (LEAP) on the well-being of its beneficiaries. She highlighted the program’s success in improving the living conditions of individuals from extremely disadvantaged families, particularly in areas such as access to education for children and business support.
During a visit to Ashanti Region communities, the Minister oversaw the disbursement of increased funds to beneficiaries following a 200% boost in payments by the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection. This enhancement in financial support provided through the LEAP program has significantly benefited households.
A press release on June 27 announced that LEAP beneficiaries would receive double the amount they received in June 2023. The government allocated GH₵103,251,072.01 to benefit 324,073 households, with 25,715 households already receiving support. This represents about 8% of the total number of beneficiary households nationwide.
Dakoa expressed her satisfaction with the progress of the LEAP program, stating that beneficiaries are receiving their funds as expected. The financial support they receive is making a noticeable difference in their lives, she added.
Beneficiaries like Yaa Pokuaa, a mother of five and a farmer, have expressed gratitude for the increased financial support. Yaa’s monthly stipend has increased from 64 cedis to 260 cedis, boosting her morale. However, she hopes for further support to enhance her business and farming activities.
Other beneficiaries share Yaa’s optimism about the program’s future, expressing delight and hope for continued evolution and improvement. They believe the initiative will provide robust support to enhance their livelihoods and create a brighter future for themselves and their families.
