Leadership failure is to blame for the failure to combat illegal mining activities polluting water bodies in Ghana, according to Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, a convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey.

He criticized the lack of intervention in the open occurrence of illegal mining in water bodies, pointing out that the issue goes beyond security challenges.

In a conversation with JoyNews, Dr Ashigbey highlighted the long-standing water pollution problems faced by the Ghana Water Company, leading to severe challenges for those reliant on these water sources.

He expressed concerns about the presence of metallic substances in treated water, raising doubts about the safety of bottled and sachet water.

Dr Ashigbey emphasized the urgent need for action, calling for the media coalition to intensify efforts in combating the problem.

He suggested taking legal action against those responsible for the pollution and referenced Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s actions in destooling chiefs involved in illegal mining activities as an example for President Akufo-Addo to follow.

Questioning the persistence of district and regional leaders in areas where major rivers are being polluted, Dr Ashigbey called for accountability and decisive actions to address the pressing issue.

He urged the media coalition to collaborate with lawyers to pursue legal actions and ensure accountability for the environmental damage being done.
