Leadership contest: A new prime minister to be named on September 5

On September 5, the name of the UK’s new prime minister will be revealed.

This evening, the Conservative Party revised the rules to make it more challenging to run for party leadership, and a deadline was established.

The field of candidates might be reduced to just two in the coming days, making this week a crucial one for the Conservatives.

Until the next leader is officially selected, Boris Johnson will continue to serve as caretaker prime minister for about the next two months.

According to the new regulations, MPs must obtain 20 nominations from fellow Tory MPs in order to be included on the ballot, which could reduce the number of candidates from the current 11.

The 1922 Committee’s chairman, Sir Graham Brady, said that the deadline for nominations for the position of Conservative Party leader is tomorrow.

On Wednesday, the first ballot will be cast, and each candidate must have 20 backers total, including their proposer and seconder.

The proposer and seconder’s names will be made public.

Candidates must receive at least 30 votes from Party colleagues in order to move on to Thursday’s second round of voting.

Voting is anticipated to resume on Monday of the following week if the field of candidates has not already been reduced to two.
