James Gyakye Quayson, the third prosecution witness in the trial of the MP for Assin North, has stated in his testimony that the accused stated he had no allegiance to any nation save Ghana when he submitted his candidacy paperwork.

The witness stated during Mr. Quayson’s attorney Tsatsu Tsikata’s cross-examination that the accused further stated in his statutory statement that he was a citizen of Ghana by birth.

Regarding specific alleged offenses in the lead-up to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election, Mr. Quayson is being charged with forgery and perjury.

He has entered a not guilty plea to five charges of perjury, making a false statutory declaration, forging a passport or travel certificate, and making a false declaration for official purposes.

According to the prosecution, when Mr. Quayson sought for a Ghanaian passport, he falsely claimed to the passport office that he did not have a passport to another nation.

Furthermore, the prosecution has charged Mr. Quayson with fabricating a statement to the Electoral Commission (EC) stating that, at the time of his filing to run for the Assin North seat, he had no allegiance to any foreign nation.

According to Abubakar Sadick Yahaya, a Registrar with the Ghanaian Judicial Service, he served as an Assin North election commissioner.

He informed the court, presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, that he had been assigned to the Assin Fosu District Court before to the election.

Is the witness writing the witness statement for the case investigator? inquired counsel. In response, Mr. Yahaya said he had sent the written statement to one of his typists to transcribe.

Counsel went on to ask the witness for the typist’s name, but he was unable to recall it.

The witness reaffirmed that he had read the aspirants’ statutory declaration in both Twi and English, including the part pertaining to the accused.

In order for the prosecution to summon its next witness, the case has been postponed until February 16 of this year.
