Former Hearts of Oak star Bernard Dong Bortey has expressed confidence in Laryea Kingston’s ability to lead the Black Stars, citing his success with the Black Starlets as proof of his coaching prowess.
Under Kingston’s guidance, the Black Starlets delivered a stunning performance in the WAFU Zone B U17 Africa Cup of Nations opener, defeating Ivory Coast 5-1 at the Legon Sports Stadium. Goals from Godfred Sarpong, Harve Gbafa, Mark Kagawa Mensah, and Joseph Narbi’s brace secured the emphatic victory for Ghana.
In an interview with Accra-based Mothers 102.7FM, Dong Bortey praised Kingston’s coaching capabilities, stating, “Laryea Kingston can coach the Black Stars ‘hands down’. It’s not just about giving the opportunity to former players, but to someone who is ready and has proven themselves.”
Dong Bortey emphasized that Kingston’s experience in transforming the national U17 team makes him a suitable candidate for coaching the Black Stars. The Black Starlets are set to face Benin in their next game as they aim to secure qualification to the U17 Africa Cup of Nations, a feat they have not achieved in seven years since their last participation in 2017.
