Professional golfer from Myanmar and the former executive chairman of the Asian Tour Kyi Hla Han has died. He died in Singapore on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the age of 61.
Hla Han was one of the biggest figures in Asian golf both as a player and an official. He represented Myanmar in five World Cups and was pivotal in the growth of Asian golf after his retirement from competition in 2004.
He started his professional career in 1980 and streaked a 25-year playing career that saw him win 12 times.
He won the 1994 Singapore Open and the Volvo China Open in 1999 and further claimed the Asian Tour Order of Merit title the same year.
He became the tour’s executive chairman after retiring as a player in 2006. He also became the first Asian to assume the position which he held for more than 10 years.
Kyi Hla Han cause of death
Kyi Hla Han died from complications arising from cancer treatment, according to France24.
The commissioner and chief executive of the Asian Tour, Cho Minn Thant described him in a press statement as ‘one of the greatest players in gold’.
“Asian golf has lost one of its greatest players, its greatest personalities and its greatest leaders. We will forever remember Kyi Hla,” Cho said.
