Kwasi Kwarteng is a British politician who began serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2022. He previously served as Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy from 2021 to 2022.

Kwasi was born on May 26, 1975, in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Kwasi’s full name is Kwasi Addo Alfred Kwarteng. His parents are Ghanaian immigrants. Kwasi is the son of Alfred K. Kwarteng and Charlotte Boaitey-Kwarteng. The couple immigrated to the UK in the 1960s. His mother is a barrister and his father is an economist in the Commonwealth Secretariat.
Kwasi Kwarteng who is UK’s first Black chancellor is also the author of several books on politics and the British Empire. He wrote a book, Ghosts of Empire, about the legacy of the British Empire, published by Bloomsbury in 2011. He also co-authored Gridlock Nation with Jonathan Dupont in 2011, about the causes of and solutions to traffic congestion in Britain.
Kwarteng attended Eton College. Before going to college, he attended a state primary school before continuing at Colet Court, an independent preparatory school in London, where he won the Harrow History Prize in 1988. Kwasi was also a King’s Scholar at college where he was awarded the prestigious Newcastle Scholarship prize. Kwasi further attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read classics and history. He achieved a first in both subjects and twice won the Browne Medal.
Before he became a member of parliament, he worked as a columnist for The Daily Telegraph and as a financial analyst at JPMorgan Chase and other investment banks.
