Kwasi Kwarteng (born 26 May 1975 as Akwasi Addo Alfred Kwarteng) is a British politician who has served as Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2022. From 2021 to 2022, he was Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. He is a Conservative Party member who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Spelthorne in northern Surrey since 2010.

Kwarteng began his education at a public elementary school before attending Colet Court, an exclusive preparatory school in London, where he received the Harrow History Prize in 1988. Kwarteng then attended Eton College, where he was a King’s Scholar and received the renowned Newcastle Scholarship.

At Trinity College, Cambridge, he majored in classics and history, earning a first in both subjects and twice winning the Browne Medal. He was a member of the University Challenge winning squad in 1995. (in the first series after the program was revived by the BBC in 1994). He was a member of the University Pitt Club at Cambridge and has since returned to visit. He received a Kennedy Scholarship at Harvard University and subsequently got a Ph.D. in economic history from the University of Cambridge in 2000.
