Indian film director and screenwriter, best known for his parallel cinema films Maya Darpan, Tarang, Khayal Gatha, and Kasba Kumar Shahani has passed away.
Kumar Shahani Cause of death
Kumar Shahani died on Saturday, February 24, 2024, in Kolkata. He was admitted to Kolkata’s AMRI hospital in Dhakuria, where he died due to age-related ailments. The news was confirmed by actor Mita Vashisht, who had collaborated with the director for films like ‘Vaar Vaar Vaari’, ‘Khayal Gatha’ and ‘Kasba’.
Speaking to PTI, Mita Vashisht said, “He passed away around 11 pm last night due to age-related health issues at a hospital in Kolkata. He was ailing and his health had been declining. It’s a deep personal loss. We were in touch with his family. Kumar and I would talk a lot and I knew he was ailing and was in and out of hospital.”
Kumar Shahani’s obituary information
Kumar Shahani was born on December 7, 1940, in Larkana, Sindh which is now in Pakistan. After the partition of India in 1947, Shahani’s family shifted to the city of Bombay (now Mumbai). He received a B. A. (Hons) from the University of Bombay in Political Science and History and studied screenplay writing and Advanced Direction at the Film and Television Institute of India, where he was a student of Ritwik Ghatak.
Kumar Shahani also studied with Dharmananda Damodar Kosambi. He was awarded a French Government Scholarship for further studies in France, where he studied at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) and assisted Robert Bresson on Une Femme Douce.
