The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has launched a new initiative called Green Soccer, with the aim of encouraging football clubs in the country to prioritize environmental sustainability.

In an interview with Peace FM, GHALCA boss Kudjoe Fianoo explained the rationale behind the initiative, highlighting the importance of promoting responsible waste management and the conservation of water resources. Fianoo emphasized that football players and officials have a crucial role to play in protecting the environment, as their actions during and after matches can have significant environmental implications.

Fianoo pointed out the impact of the excessive use of water during football matches, stating that the water consumption needs to be managed effectively to ensure sustainability. He also highlighted the issue of improper disposal of waste, such as rubber materials left on the football pitch after games, which can contribute to clogging gutters and causing flooding during rainy seasons.

The Green Soccer initiative will involve monitoring and evaluating the environmental practices of football clubs, with those engaging in sustainable practices being rewarded and those violating environmental regulations facing penalties. Fianoo stressed the importance of raising awareness about the environmental impact of football activities and called on all football stakeholders to play their part in promoting environmental sustainability.

By introducing the Green Soccer initiative, GHALCA aims to set a positive example for football clubs in Ghana and contribute to the global efforts towards environmental conservation and sustainable development. It is hoped that this initiative will inspire other sports organizations and clubs to adopt similar practices, leading to a more environmentally conscious sporting community in Ghana.
