The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) requested permission to continue operating the Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML) system to improve revenue assurance, but President Akufo-Addo denied the request.
“President Akufo-Addo has taken note of the request made by GRA, asking for the monitoring system installed and used by SML to continue, notwithstanding the suspension of its GRA-related operations,” according to a statement signed by Eugene Arhin, the director of communications at the Office of the President.
The statement read, “The president has denied GRA’s request and has directed that the status quo, concerning the suspension of the contract’s performance, should remain in effect until the audit’s completion and, subsequently, KPMG’s submission of the audit report.”
KPMG, an audit and accounting firm, was chosen by President Akufo-Addo earlier this month to audit the SML contract and provide a report within two weeks. However, this has been moved to February 23rd per KPMG’s request. The president claims that the purpose of the extension is to guarantee a more thorough report.
The deadline for KPMG to finish its audit of the transaction between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd (SML) has been extended by President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Originally set for Tuesday, January 16, 2024, the new date is Friday, February 23, 2024.
